What is therapy?

Many people wonder what psychotherapy entails, when is the right time to begin, and how it works. These questions are relevant, and it may not be easy to decide to begin.
Therapy is a process that empowers us to grow and to improve our self-knowledge.. It also offers an opening towards changes and the possibility to live life to the fullest.

Why consult?

There is often an apprehension around the choice to begin a therapy. The need to share and reach a deeper understanding of oneself is a good indication that therapy could be beneficial. Proactively facing our fears and resolving issues through therapy is an initiative to be proud of.

Some reasons for consultation could be :
- Relationship issues
- Parenting support
- Professional stress
- Anxiety
- Low self-estime
- Life transitions (geographical mobility, divorce, adolescence...)

- Coping skills after punctual events (birth, illness, bereavement...)
- Depressive states
- Trauma and PTSD
- Violence

Ethics and confidentiality

Confidentiality is a major component of the therapeutical relationship. Every aspect of your involvement in the therapy, from booking the appointment to the content of the sessions, is private. Federal law defines the limits of confidentiality for exceptional situations dealing with the safety of the patient or vulnerable individuals. For further information, please refer to the documentation given at the beginning of the therapy.

Regularity and frequency

The regularity of sessions is a key element of psychotherapy. The frequency is defined by individual needs and can vary thoroughout the therapy.

Duration of a psychotherapy

The duration of the psychotherapy varies. It depends on the patient's needs. Brief therapies may help to find relief and reach defined goals. These include the systemic approach and the EMDR, which offer efficient tools for such cases. Other therapies require more time in particular those which offer to work on deep-rooted concerns. In all cases, time is an agent of change.

Therapy ending

The optimal moment to end the therapy is discussed between the patient and the therapist. It depends on the achievement of the goals set during the initial phase of therapy.
